SYSTEMS Spray-Cooled, Inc. (SSCI) of Nashville, Tenn., has recently been awarded the contract to design and supply new larger and taller Spray-Cooled™ EAF upper shells and EAF roofs to Nucor-Yamato Steel for the company’s single bucket charge upgrade on its two existing EAFs in Blytheville, Ark.

Nucor-Yamato has had Spray-Cooled™ EAF upper shells, roofs, roof elbows and off-gas ducts in successful operation since 1988.

The new larger diameter and taller Spray-Cooled™ EAF side walls will reduce Nucor-Yamato’s operations from a 2-bucket to a single bucket charge increasing personnel safety.  The new larger diameter and taller Spray-Cooled™ EAF roofs will be designed to incorporate SSCI’s latest technology STEEP CONE roof hot face surface.  This STEEP CONE roof will provide additional service life and reduced maintenance costs during the life of the equipment in addition to operational and safety benefits such as increased scrap volume, greater resistance to arc attraction, and improved cooling efficiency.

In addition to the new Spray-Cooled™ EAF upper shells and roofs, SSCI has also been awarded the contract to modify the existing off-gas Spray-Cooled™ duct to accommodate the taller furnace components.  As part of this modification, SSCI will design and supply new Spray-Cooled™ single panel drop-out chamber roofs.  The new Spray-Cooled™ single panel drop-out chamber roofs will be designed to incorporate a new 4-ft. Spray-Cooled™ duct extension that is needed to bridge the newly created gap between the roof elbow and fixed off-gas duct due to the increased height of the new taller furnace components.
